Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery

Don’t let the name fool you. This is not a die hard, grognard title like Civilizations or Axis & Allies. The focus on this game is more in asset management than killing your opponents people. Although, there is some of that involved.

One of the best things about this game is its multiple paths to winning. You can go with the militaristic view of kill and conquer or try the more commercial strategy of acquiring resources and money… then again, maybe you want to flood the new world with religion. Of course, nothing stops you from using multiple strategies during the game and to be quite honest… you should. While the price point of this game is a little hefty, you get what you pay for. A beautiful board, top notch playing pieces and a fun filled hour and a half.

I’d like to thank Tim for bringing this over last gameday. I had a blast playing it. I’m just glad nobody caught onto my ‘lose by 20 points’ strategy and tried to thwart me during the third age.

Complexity: 3             Strategy: 5             Luck: 1             Overall: 4

I had a great time also and thanks for hosting the game session.

I really did not know who was going to win until we tallied points at the end. The point spread was really pretty close with only a 10pt difference between 1st and 4th. 5pts between 1st and 2nd and 2pts between 2nd and 3rd and 3pts between 3rd and 4th. I was sort of surprised when Tim S. won. I was not paying him too much attention and he was kind of quiet the whole game except for the battles you and him were waging on everybody. Tim S. really did not dominate in any one area of that scored VPs except maybe points for colonies and that was small.

If David had had a couple of soldiers to reinforce his colony in Brazil I think he would have won.

Moral of the story: If you have a colony with several colonist and some other player puts a soldier in there you better make it a #1 priority to get a soldier in there (no matter how big it is) to counter them before your colonist start disappearing.

I played this over Christmas and it was awesome.
In two-player game: if one player puts 5 in discovery and the other snatches 4 trade goods with ship then merchant wins. In real game the adventuresome player can snatch up a trade good at appropriate time to break set and probably won’t suffer discovery.
